This composition is based on an original by Joli, which was auctioned on 9 December 1992 at Sotheby’s London (lot 78).
There is an inscription verso with a note saying that the scene depicted represents a festival that took place in Naples in 1763. Architectural decorations were constructed for this purpose in front of the Palazzo Reale. Joli’s picture may have served as a modello for the planning of the decorations. It is testimony of the sophisticated, courtly life of that period.
