Anthonis Mor van Dashorst, also called Antonio Moro, is mostly known for his elegant portraits, but he also excelled as a painter of religious subjects. The present painting is Mor’s pre-eminent devotional picture and was executed during one of his longer stays in Utrecht. Its original destination is unknown, but its size indicates a commission of some prominence. The face of Saint Paul may be a self-portrait. Another nearly identical version of the present work is in the Musée Condé, Chantilly (oil on panel, 160 x 152 cm).
