Friedrich Gauermann

Friedrich Gauermann - Obrazy 19. století

(Miesenbach 1807–1862 Vienna)
Dairymaid with girl and two cows on the Grand, monogrammed F. G.,
oil on panel, 18 x 24.5 cm, framed, (Rei)

Catalogued and illustrated in:
Rupert Feuchtmüller, Friedrich Gauermann (1807–1862), Rosenheimer Verlagshaus 1987, p. 308, no. 361.

Provenance:
Private Collection, Vienna.

Friedrich Gauermann’s painting is inextricably linked to the history of Austrian art during the 19th century, and he is regarded as one of the most significant landscape painters of his time. He initially depicted his landscapes in a stand-alone manner, rather than populating them with animals and people. Traditional Dutch painting served as his model, and influenced him throughout his career. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he was not drawn to Italy or to the South. He was barely interested in these views; he felt much more at home in the Alps. His representations of nature are highly picturesque. An atmospheric effect created through the usage of light and shade is characteristic of his style. He liked to bring people, animals and nature into harmony in his representations, and this harmony is also emphasised by his choice of colour palette, as illustrated in the present painting.
