Josef Willroider
(Villach 1838–1915 Munich)
Vast landscape with washerwoman, signed, dated and inscribed J. Willroider Ddf 1874,
oil on canvas, 103 x 152 cm, framed, (Rei)
Provenance:
Private Collection, Germany.
Josef Willroider moved to Düsseldorf in 1866. It is not clear what triggered this move, although one possible motivator could have been the good reputation of the Academy in Düsseldorf, where, unlike in Munich, landscape painting played a significant role. As a result, the colourful depictions of southern and northern landscapes as rendered by Oswald and Andreas Achenbach had a substantial influence on Willroider. Josef Willroider was a constant presence at exhibitions in Düsseldorf, attending with the Malkasten (“Paintbox”) artists’ movement. The Malkasten artists’ movement was founded in 1848. It brought together the more progressive of the Düsseldorf-based landscape painters, who set themselves apart from academic traditionalism and instead painted in the open air, following the French model.
