Luca Giordano

(1632-1705) attributed to, Adoration of the Shepherds, black chalk, heightened with white, on brownish prepared paper, 43 x 26.8 cm, rubbed creases, mounted, unframed, (Sch)

The dynamic composition and the emphasis being laid upon the foreground on sight- level of the spectator, which thus causes an immediate proximity of the represented scene, is comparable to similar features in the work of Luca Giordano. The high degree of execution suggests that the sheet may have served as a preliminary study for a painting or a fresco and possibly was executed by Giordano himself or by a workshop member. Most likely our drawing is comparable with an “Adoration of the Shepherds in the Museo Correr, Venice (see Scavizzi 1992, vol. 2, p. 388), which is only known to us through a print by Pietro Monaco. The same theme was treated in a painting executed by Giordano’s pupil and later workshop member Nicola Malinconico (Naples 1654-1721); the painting is comparable with the present drawing. (Compare Scavizzi 1992, vol.2., p.215). Literature: Oreste Ferrari/Giuseppe Scavizzi, Luca Giordano. L'opera completa, 3 Vols., Milan 1992.
