Charles Beaubrun

(Amboise 1604–1692 Paris)
Portrait of Anna of Spain (Anne d’Autriche, 1601–1666), Queen Mother of France, her daughter-in-law, Maria Theresia of Spain, Queen of France (1638–1683), and her grandson, the Grand Dauphin (1661–1711), oil on canvas, diameter 94 cm, framed.

A variant of this composition was auctioned at the Dorotheum, Vienna, on 31 March 2009 as lot 69. It is a rare example of a family portrait involving three generations of the House of Bourbon. The unmistakeable similarities to the sacred subject of the Virgin and Child with St. Anne are not unfitting for a dynasty, the head of which, the King of France, named himself the most Christian monarch. Beaubrun produced an image here which has a hieratic effect in its linking of several generations of both of the most important families of rulers in Europe. There are only a few known examples of this composition, previously attributed to Pierre Mignard (on this subject, see E. Coquery, in: cat. ‘Visages du Grand Siècle, Le Portrait Français sous le Règne de Louis XIV 1660–1715’, Paris/ Nantes/Toulouse 1997, p. 199, no. 2). On the reverse on an old hand a label inscribed with the message, “Painted by a pupil of Caspar Netscher, 1684”.
