Giovanni Battista Moretti
(Bologna 1700–1761 Venice)
An architectural capriccio, oil on canvas, 120 x 144 cm, framed,
Giovanni Battista Moretti, who arrived in Venice from Bologna, made a name for himself as a painter of decorations and veduti. The present architectural view depicts a three-naved hall with cross vaulting supported by Corinthian columns. It is drenched in a luminous white and combines the most important elements of Italian Renaissance architecture. Arched buttresses with parapet walls and an ogee arch-like roof construction. Thrown into relief by the side chapels which remain in darkness, this offers the viewer an idealised perspective view over a lake or estuary. A similar painting by Moretti was auctioned at Sotheby’s, London, on 27.05.2004.
