Benedetto Caliari
(Verona 1538 – 1598), attributed to
Portrait of a girl with a dog, oil on canvas, 100 x 79 cm, carved and gilded frame, c. 1600.
Certificate: Prof. Maurizio Marini, 4 August 2010
Another version of the present painting in the Thyssen Collection has been attributed to Paolo Veronese on various occasions, but is probably a work by his brother, Benedetto Caliari. According to Prof. Maurizio Marini, the present work is a joint product of Paolo Veronese and his brother, Benedetto Caliari, with the former having conceived the general composition (l’impostazione generale) and having painted the faces and hands and the latter having completed the rest. of the composition. Marini bleives that the same is true for the version in the Thyssen Collection, Madrid.
