Peter Fendi
(Vienna 1796–1842) Young Woman Rescuing a Drowning Doll, signed and dated Fendi 1838, watercolour on paper, edged with black India ink, 20.2 x 25.9 cm, unframed, (GS)
Provenance: Private German collection. He pursues a meditative, sometimes even forced pathos, and surprises with quiet and unobtrusive humour and exquisite, often childish naivety. Whether showing elegaic, sentimental scenes of small-town life, or regaling with innocent and jolly surburban anecdotes, whether constantly drawn to the world of small things, or depicting mother and child in all imaginable situations and with poignant, delicate movements, he always paints with true sympathy, always resonating with his genuinely Viennese disposition. A contemporary critic called him the painting Schubert....“
