South German a.) Plague Cross with Zacharias’ Blessing, 17th Century bronze patriarchal cross, =77,5 mm= Av: +/Z+D/ three needles/ IA + BI/Z /+/ S. Rv: A/B+Z/ heart/ +HGF+/ B/F/R/S. These crosses were also known in the Donauwörth and other South German towns as "Caravaca Crosses". b.) Ulrich’s Cross 17th/18th Century. St. Ulrich received a cross from heaven during the battle of Lechtfeld. 1.) silver, embossed (1762) see also Brettau, Medicina in Nummis, Vienna 1937, No. 1527. (= Friesenegger III A 19.) 2.) cast metal, 18th Century Brettau, No. 1531 (Fr. IV 6.) 3.) Brass, embossed, 18th Century. View of the city of Augsburg verso. 4.) Ulrich and Benedict Crosses, bronze, embossed, St Benedict between St Gertrude and St Scholastica, verso. Brettau, 1533. (Fr. III B 3.) This cross was used as an amulet against the plague, illness (disease in general), but also as a weather cross (against hail and storms) or as a field cross (against vermin, locusts etc.). They are often worn in combination, Zacharias or Benedictus blessings.
