Both compositions are replicas by the artist’s workshop of two paintings Sweerts had done around 1650–52 in Rome (formerly in the collection of the Princes Corsini in Florence). The Old Man Warming Himself by a Fire appeared on the art market several years ago (comp. R. Kultzen, Michael Sweerts, Doornspijk 1996, no. 20, pl. 20), whereas the whereabouts of its pendant are unknown. Therefore both compositions formerly in the Palazzo Corsini have been handed down as a complete pair in the form of the present works.
