The two paintings are comparable to the pictures in the Doria Pamphili Collection in Rome that were attributed to Van den Bossche by both Sestieri (see G. Sestieri 1942, pp. 354/55) and Van Puyvelde (see L. van Puyvelde, La peinture flamande à Rome, 1950, p. 214), but which have now been assigned to his teacher, Gerard Thomas (Antwerp 1633–1720/1). The pictures’ compositions, which are anything else but realistic, are reminiscent of depictions of the cabinet d’amateur, a genre in which many 17th-century Antwerp painters had specialized. The celestial globes rendered in both pictures also appear in the paintings by Gerard Thomas as an allusion to the harmony of nature.
