Portrait of Duke Eberhard II of Württemberg (1447- 1504), oil on canvas, 53 x 42 cm, framed,
Eberhard was the son of Count Ulrich of Württemberg and Princess Elizabeth of Bavaria-Landshut. In 1466 he married the Margravin Elizabeth of Brandenburg. In 1480 he became the governing count of Württemberg-Stuttgart, and in 1496 was appointed Duke of Württemberg. Eberhard II was involved in a permanent conflict with the estates of his country, which led to his displacement and expatriation in 1498 (due to the Arbitrament of Horb pronounced by King Maximilian I). Until the duke’s nephew and heir had come of age, the country was governed by a proxy. Eberhard II died in exile in the Palatinate, on Lindenfels Castle at Odenwald. This picture as well may have formed part of a gallery of ancestors or regents. Pendant to preceding lot.
