Leopold III, a member of the Babenberg family and margrave of Austria (1073-1136) was the founder of Klosterneuburg Monastery near Vienna (1108), which he built into his residence. Apart from Klosterneuburg, he was also concerned with the development of the towns of Vienna and Krems. In 1483 the margrave was canonized. His commemoration day – referred to as “Leopoldi Day” – is 15 November, which is still a popular holiday today. In 1663, Leopold I declared the magrave-saint the national patron of Austria.
