porcelain, the body with wide gilt edging and dark red rim, gilt relief borders with ovals and beads, gilt leaf-festoons on white well, the inside rim with burnished gilt painted leaves and tendrils on matt gilt band, the well with dark brown ground and polychrome painted scene, an erote with quiver standing in a wheeled bucket carriage, light purple bands in the right hand reining in 2 serpents, in the left hand a palm branch used to goad the serpents, after Raffael, Ø 24,2 cm, Vienna, Imperial Manufactory, underglaze blue Austrian shield, date 1798, Sorgenthal Era, turner no. 32 Mathias Ameseder as of 1783, gilt painter no. 96, Anton Kothgasser, foremost dessin painter at the Vienna Manufactory 1784-1816 (Ru)
Scene after a gouache, based on a Raffael (1483- 1520) sketch, from the bathroom of cardinal Bibbiena, (1513-1520), at the Vatican, Rome. The gouache was created by Michelangelo Maestri (1750- 1812 Rome), whose very decorative gouaches contain designs from the recently discovered rooms of ancient Pompeii and Herculaneum, or as in this case are based on designs by Raffael and his student Giulio Romano. Raffaello Santi, (Urbino 6.4.1483-6.4.1520 Rome, Italy), painter and architect, called to Rome by Pope Julius II., and 1515 appointed chief architect of St Peter's and curator of ancient monuments by Leo X.
