A procession in front of the cathedral of Siena,
signed and dated lower right: W. Hermann 1832,
oil on canvas, 72 x 97 cm, framed
This veduta, with a procession in front of the cathedral of Siena by the Dresden-based artist Woldemar Hermann, excellently reflects his artistic career. Trained as an architect, he designed buildings in Dresden and Leipzig. In 1830, he submitted a design for the new court theatre in Dresden, which, however, failed to prevail over Gottfried Semper’s proposal. Hermann undertook several study tours to Rome and Italy, where he made contact with the Nazarenes. After 1848 he exclusively devoted himself to painting. The present architectural study of the cathedral of Siena is a truthful and highly precise rendering of Giovanni Pisano’s edifice, which is about to be entered here by a procession. In both Hermann’s activity as an architect, and his later output as an architectural and genre painter, there reverberates the nineteenth century and Romanticism’s fascination with the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, which is reflected in the choice of the present subject.
