Antonio Calza

Antonio Calza - Obrazy starých mistrů

(Verona 1653–1725)
Battle scene,
oil on canvas, 87 x 249 cm, framed

We are grateful to Giancarlo Sestieri for confirming the attribution of the present painting.

This painting represents an important new addition to the corpus of work by Antonio Calza. Given its particular format it may have been originally intended as an over-door, and as such it is one of the artist’s most imposing works of the kind. The intense dynamism of this Battle Scene, the concise manner of its representation, revealing charged moments are characteristic elements of Calza’s oeuvre.

The present work can be compared to other Battle Scenes by Antonio Calza, such as the pair formerly in a private collection at Bergamo which share a similar compositional arrangement and vitality of execution (see G. Sestieri, I Pittori di Battaglie. Maestri italiani e stranieri del XVII e XVIII secolo, Rome 1999, fig. 22-23). Certain compositional features are also typical of Calza, such as the group of three cavaliers wearing breastplates and plumed helmets that break into the scene from the left, or the white horses animating the foreground.
