(active second half of the 17th century)
A squirrel and hamsters by a basket of mushrooms, fruit and flowers; and
A monkey caught stealing fruit by a dog,
oil on copper, each 18.8 x 26.2 cm, framed, a pair (2)
Provenance:
with Robert Finck, Brussels (1976)
Literature:
K. Ertz/C. Nitze-Ertz, Die Maler Jan van Kessel, Lingen 2012, pp. 424 and 457, nos. 97 and 203, ill. (as Jan van Kessel II)
We are grateful to Fred Meijer for suggesting the attribution upon first-hand inspection.
This pair of still lifes can be added to a group of pictures, mostly on copper and some on walnut panels, made in the style of Jan van Kessel II. Fred Meijer has proposed this group be attributed to the ‘Pseudo Jan van Kessel II’, an artist who was most likely working in southern Europe, probably Italy, during the 17th century.
