This fully signed painting is a typical work by Theobald Michau, who was one of the most talented followers of Jan Brueghel I as well as David Teniers II. His paintings are executed in the refined technique required for small-scale jewel-like cabinet pictures, of which the present painting is a finely preserved example. During the eighteenth century there was an enormous demand for Michau’s elegantly coloured village scenes.
