… The bouquet of alpine flowers with arnica, edelweiss, prunella, alpine roses, bluebells, alpine bog-star (?), lady’s smock and a blossoming alpine anemone is positioned within a green and white ceramic vase atop a ceramic plate.
The decoration on the ceramic is evocative of Gmunder Keramik. The plate and vase are placed on a slightly diagonal table top; the background is submerged in a dark blue colour. The application of colour reveals spontaneous brushstrokes.

Alfons Walde used flowers in his work time and again: in his early pieces dating from 1912–1914 he made use of them in a manner drawn from Gustav Klimt (Gert Ammann, Alfons Walde 1891–1958, 5th edition, Innsbruck-Vienna 2005, ill. pp. 23, 210, 211), then around 1920 he used powerful, expressive shades and abstract shapes (Gert Ammann, Alfons Walde, cit., ill. pp. 228–234), and in his late work (1952–54) he attempted to create individual, realistic yet expressive bouquets (Gert Ammann, Alfons Walde, op. cit., ill. pp. 310 and 311). The small “Still Life with Pears” in the Leopold Museum also shows Gmunder Keramik being used as the subject (inv. no. 426; Rudolf Leopold/Gert Ammann/Carl Kraus, Alfons Walde, Leopold Museum catalogue, Vienna 2006, ill. p. 135).
