copiously on Luba life and traditions. A dozen or so stools in this style are known, as well as a number of bowl bearing female figures 'mbokoö, one of which was famously photographed by Burton and showing Kitwa Biseke, official carver to the Nkulu chieftainship (Mwanza region) in the process of finishing one. This stool and the one accompanying it in the field photograph, probably represent some of the last traditional stools retained by an elder and represent two generations of carving, and possibly recall the memory of specific departed ancestors or spouse.
