A large royal Zulu scepter, South Africa, 19th century.
Wood, 202 cm. These large 'clubs' are used as ceremonial staff to indicate the importance of the king that presents it. The length of the snake represents the longevity and power of the ruler who yields it, and this particular staff has a 5-meter wooden snake circling the scepter.
