A small, checkered Nafana Bedu mask.

A small, checkered Nafana Bedu mask. - Tribal Art

L 101 cm. These very spectacular masks originated among the Nafana of north-eastern Ivory Coast, but, as they are considered very powerful, they have been borrowed by other ethnic groups and by the Nafana of Ghana. Austin, 'Travels Life in Ashanti and Jaman' London: Archibald Constable, 1897), 'Among the most impressively scaled masks in sub-saharan Africa, they serve to actually rid communities of disease or to insure against possible sickness. They also are called upon to avert agricultural disaster, human infertility an severe drought.' (Bravman, René A., 'Gur and Manding Masquerades in Ghana', African Arts, XIII-1, 1979, pp. 44-51).

Provenance
Collected in situ in Bondoukou region (Ivory Coast) in the 1960s. Belgian collection. Yale GvR 102076. Cfr. a very similar mask from Nancy & Herbert Baker collection sold at Sotheby's, New York, 11 November 2005 (lot 63).
