Wood, natural fibres, 50 x 20 cm. Among the panoply of known Dogon mask types, the hunter mask is characterized by its large size, bulging forehead, and ferocious mouth, which would have been adorned with real teeth to accentuate the expression. A similar example was photographed being danced by the Dogon by M. Griaule during the famous Dakar-Djibouti expedition in 1931. This powerful mask has danced and been ritually fed with palm oil, as is evident from the libation patina on the forehead.
