Classic Teotihuacan stone mask, Mexico ca. A. D. 450-650.
20 x 21 cm. This fine example carved from a beautiful translucent green Travertine locally known as Mexican Onyx or Tecali, after the area where it is found. With typically rectangular flanged ears, high cheekbones, prominent nose and slightly parted lips, the expression is one of noble divinity. Recent studies indicate that these masks were used in everyday ritual, likely as household deities rather than as votive items. They were made far from Teotihuacan and transported to their final destination. Old breaks and repairs. Roberto Donis, Mexican artist, Barcelona. Accompanied by a microscopic surface analysis report executed by Dr. P. Blanc, Université Pierre & Marie Curie.
