reduced to basic geometric shapes, molten, cut, and polished optical glass, mounted on a stainless steel base, diameter approx. 40.5 cm, depth approx. 9 cm, height (incl. stand) approx. 120 cm.
‘I use glass as a facilitator of observation and meditation’, says Vaclav Cigler. Between 1965 and 1979 he headed the Department of Architectural Glass at the Bratislava Art Academy. Cigler was born in Vsetin in 1929. Having initially attended the Novy Bor glass school, he switched to the School of Arts and Crafts in Prague, where he studied from 1951 to 1957 under Josef Kaplicky. Today he works as an independent artist in Prague. Light has always played a crucial role in Cigler’s designs. It has been his ambitious goal to explore the play between interior and exterior space. Cigler’s works and installations have been presented in Europe, North America, and Asia. His works are represented in numerous major collections, such as the Corning Museum of Glass in New York, the Glasmuseet Ebeltoft in Denmark, the art collections at Coburg Fortress in Germany, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the Slovak National Gallery in Bratislava, and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Cigler received numerous awards, including the Decorative Arts Prize of the Union of Czechoslovakian Visual Artists in 1968 and the Honorary Coburg Glass Prize in 1985.
