Silk Lampas
lancé and brocaded, Italy, c. 164 x 134 cm, about 1700, horizontal repeat with winged chimaeras (hybrid beasts) facing each other, resting on heart-shaped vase motifs, with a predator body and gryphon’s head, the pattern is reminiscent of Byzantine textiles of the 14th and 15th centuries, with gold membrane and heavily oxidised embedded metal threads, this piece is in superb condition and still largely preserved, subsequently framed all around with a brocade border and ornamental fringes, mounted on silk.
