After Archduke Maximilian consented to accept the Mexican crown in 1863, he left Miramare Castle and moved to Mexico. The interior decoration was designed by Franz and Julius Hofmann in collaboration with the Emperor, who supervised the works from Mexico. The textile wall coverings were destroyed after World War II.
