The Sacrifice of Iphigenia, oil study on canvas, 55 x 115 cm, framed, (Rei)
The scene shown in the present work shows Iphigenia shortly before being sacrificed. As her father Agammenon had insulted Artemis, the goddess of hunting, it was prophesied that he would one day have to sacrifice his daughter. When Agamemnon set sail for Troy with his fleet at the beginning of the Trojan Wars, Artemis caused a lull in the wind making it impossible for him to continue his journey. In order to continue, Agamemnon would have first to sacrifice his daughter.
