(Oels, Lower Silesia 1942–2010 Cologne) Friends II, signed, dated S. Polke 67, gouache on offset lithography, 47.5 x 60 cm, published by Galerie h (August Haseke) Hannover, framed, (PS)
There are 25 APs of the edition, each individual painted by Sigmar Polke with watercolour and unique.
Literature:
Jürgen Becker, Claus von der Osten, Sigmar Polke, Die Editionen 1963–2000, Catalogue Raisonné, Ostfildern-Ruit, 2000, no. 4, p. 15 (illustration of a different example)
Sigmar Polke used the technique of the raster-dot from 1961 onwards and his studies at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.
Ostensibly Polke enlarges the smallest resolutions from newspaper clippings and printed photographs, breaking them down into their individual pixels. The “enlargements” are not based on a technical process; instead the raster dots are applied by hand to the medium being processed. In the offset of “Zwei Freundinnen II”, Polke uses strong tones to colour in the details he believed particularly important. The uniqueness of his works lies in their individual colouring.
