Philipp Klein
(Mannheim 1871–1907 Hornegg am Neckar) Morning toilette, signed, dated Philipp Klein 06, oil on canvas, 80 x 100 cm, framed, (PS)
Philipp Klein came to Munich in 1892 where he joined the Scholle group of artists, whose painters have a significant influence on his work. He met Max Slevogt while travelling to Berlin to study. Slevogt’s painting technique fascinated Klein, and he adopted this style, particularly in the colouring of his still lifes. In the work Morning toilette the still life arrangement is deliberately staged by the sunlight flooding in from the left foreground and creates reflections on the teapot, cups and flower vase. The back view of the nude is bathed in a delicate yellow by the morning sun. Philipp Klein first exhibited in the Glaspalast in Munich in 1896, and integrated works at the Secession in Munich and Berlin from 1899 onwards. The painter was repeatedly honoured, as in 1905 with the golden medal, and was often shown by the famous Munich gallery, Galerie Joseph Brakl & Thannhauser.
