Empire étagère,
Vienna circa 1805/15. A serpentine mahogany-veneered hardwood étagère of lyre-like form, with a dark stained border, three hexagonal shelves and moulded edges and an X stretcher. Height approx. 135 cm. In cared-for condition. (DOC) Prov.: formerly Schloss Weilburg in Baden (see archive photograph). Castle Weilburg commissioned in 1820/23 by Archduke Charles, victor of the battle of Apern-Essling, after plans by the architect Josef Kornhäusel (1773 - 1850) was an important Neo-Classical castle, which was once considered one of the most splendid in Austria. Little remains today of the horseshoe-shaped complex. Towards the end of World War II the castle was severely damaged by fire and in 1964 both the castle ruins, the stables and the Neo-Gothic chapel were fully dismantled when the land was parcelled out. Lit.: Waltraud de martin: Die Weilburg in Baden, Entstehung und Geschichte, 1988.
