Venetian School, 18th Century
Bacchanal,
oil on canvas, 102.5 x 136.5 cm, framed
The present work is closely related to a painting by Sebastiano Ricci in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg (oil on canvas, 104 x 142.5 cm), which can be dated to around the period in which Ricci moved to England (see A. Scarpa, Sebastiano Ricci, Milan, 2006, p. 297, no. 432). Although it remains unclear why he left Venice, it is generally accepted that he travelled to England in the winter of 1711-12.
The present work appears to be unfinished and it has been suggested that this work was started by Sebastiano Ricci and for some reason later abandoned.
The motif of a voluptuous female figure embedded in a landscape was a popular one for Ricci, and one that he consistently developed. His variations on this subject matter also inspired many other artists. Ricci frequently experimented with poses and figures, preparing drawings with figure studies reminiscent of Veronese. He prepared for his more elaborate compositions with a series of studies which would then be followed by more detailed designs.
