Sebastiano Ceccarini

We are grateful to Professor Francesco Petrucci, who has confirmed the present painting to be an autograph work by Ceccarini on the basis of a photograph.
Ceccarini relied on such 17th century such as Domenichino, Guido Reni, and Carlo Maratti, whose works became known to him through his teacher, Francesco Mancini. As a portraitist, he developed a courtly style characterized by formal poses and excelled in the rendering of diverse fabrics. Among his sitters were such high-ranking clergymen as the Cardinals Landi and Spada. Some of his works, including Self-Portrait of the Artist Painting His Daughter, are conserved in the Pinacoteca Civica in Fano.
