We are grateful to Prof Alberto Cottino, who has confirmed this painting to be an authentic work by Valentino based on a photograph. The picture is accompanied by a written certificate.
Valentino, who was primarily active in Rome, specialised in detailed kitchen still lifes. Prof Cottino compares this painting with two kitchen interiors in the collection of Credito Valtellinese in Sondrio; they depict vessels, fruits and game birds in a similar composition. The kitchen still life in the Musée Fesch, Ajaccio, which features vegetables, mushrooms and fish may be a pendant to this painting due to its identical format.
