László Paál

László Paál - Obrazy 19. století

(Zam 1846–1879 Charenton-le-Pont) Working in the Garden, signed, dated L. v. Paál (1)870, oil on panel, 37 x 26.5 cm, framed, (Rei)

Provenance: German family property since 1880.

László Paál was initially a pupil at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Albert Zimmermann, amongst others, before he entered the Düsseldorf Academy upon the recommendation of Mihály Munkáczy. Study trips took him to Holland and London. It was his encounters with artists of the Barbizon School, which he joined in 1873, which were to have a particular influence on his artistic work. In 1873 the artist was awarded a medal at the world exhibition in Vienna for his painting Sunset; this was followed four years later with a further medal for his work A Path in the Woods at Fontainebleau at the world exhibition in Paris. Paál is regarded as one of Hungary’s most important landscape painters. His landscapes are characterised by their realistic manner of painting, his style becoming increasingly Impressionist over the years.
