Johann Nepomuk Hoechle

Provenance: Auction Dorotheum, Vienna, 16th March 1976, lot 76; Private German collection. This work was painted around 1832 and is one of Hoechle’s most important pieces. Hoechle began his career as a pupil of Ferdinand Kobell in Munich. Later he moved to Vienna where he studied from 1804 to 1808 at the Academy under Füger and Wutky. Influenced by Ignace Duviviers, a member of the Academy since 1801, Hoechle turned to battle painting and enjoyed great success with this genre. He regularly accompanied the Emperor on important manoeuvres. He painted his military scenes, some in large format, using the sketches he made on these occasions.
