Provenance: collection of Dr. Einar Perman, Stockholm; Galerie Pieter de Boer, Amsterdam (1965); Sotheby’s auction, London, 7 July 2005, lot 122; European private collection.
Literature: Alexander Wied, Nachträge zu Lucas und Marten van Valckenborch, in: Jahrbuch des Kunsthistorischen Museums, vol. 6, 2004, fig. 19 (as ‘attributed to Lucas van Valckenborch or workshop of’). We are grateful to Dr. Alexander Wied, Vienna, for the certifying this painting in the original. Dr. Wied is of the opinion, that this is either an original by Valckenborch, possibly a copy of a lost painting, or a workshop copy. The high quality of the figures supports the notion of the autograph nature of this painting, according to Dr. Wied.
