Ciro Ferri

(Rome 1633-1689) An allegory of Justice and Peace, oil on canvas, 113 x 81.6 cm

The present composition was only known until recently from a copy of 1760 by Caterina Cherubini Preciada conserved in Madrid, Accademia San Fernando. The present compostion was already considered lost from 1819 (see Perez Sanchez, 1964, n. 208, p. 27; Perez Sanchez, 1965, p. 278, Urrea Fernandez, 1977, p. 270, tav. LXXVII, 1). There are two compositions by Ciro Ferri of the same subject matter and they may well derive for an original composition by Pietro Da Cortona. The composition may be compared to the drawing attributed to Cortona, but possibly in collaboration with Ferri himself (sold Sotheby´s London 28th July 1977, Lord Milford collection, Lugt 2697) (Fig. 1) Stylistically the work can be dated to between 1675-1680 and the attribution has been confirmed by Mina Gregori (written communication 20 June 2007) Gaincalro Sestieri (writtern communication 13th July 2007) and Maria Cristina Paoluzzi who will include the present work in her forthcoming monograph on the artist.
