Caspar van den Hoecke
(Antwerp 1585–1649) The Queen of Sheba and King Solomon, oil on canvas, 105 x 167 cm, framed,
Comparative literature: E. Duverger, Antwerpse kunstinventarissen uit de zeventiende eeuw, Brüssel 1984, I, p. 95; H. Vlieghe, Flemish Art and Architecture, 1585-1700, New Haven and London 1998, p. 95; W. Bernt, 1980, vol. II, no. 563. Caspar van den Hoecke numbers among those prominent masters of the High Baroque in Antwerp whose oeuvres still need to be systematically explored. His early panels, most of which feature small formats, still reveal the overwhelming impact of the Francken family and their additive manner of painting, as well as a commitment to the Antwerp tradition. In his later period, Hoecke was under the influence of Rubens, Van Dyck, and Jordaens, and his paintings, now larger in size, were dominated by powerful figures rendered in brilliant colours. For the present composition, Hoecke referred to a smaller variant on wood, which he modified considerably (comp. W. Bernt, vol. II, 1980, no. 563).
