Rudolf Ribarz

(Vienna 1848–1904) “Ruins of the Castle belonging to the von der Leyen Family on the Moselle”, according to description in the artist’s own hand on the reverse, signed Ribarz, oil on canvas, 65.5 x 81 cm, framed, (Rei)

Exhibition label Künstlerhaus Vienna 1898, 4458, confirmed by Dr. Wladimir Aichelburg. According to information kindly provided by Dr. Wladimir Aichelburg, the label 1900/1965 refers to a different work by the same artist. (Apparently the artist exchanged the frames.) Schloss Gondorf, Kobern-Gondorf: Schloss Gondorf is the only castle set directly beside the River Moselle. It was once the seat of the von der Leyen family who were elevated to the rank of Prince in the 18th century. The von der Leyen family produced several archbishops of Trier and Mainz. The castle was probably built during the 12th century and was mentioned for the first time in 1272. The castle was rebuilt as a stately home around 1560, with neo-Gothic additions being made during the 19th century. Today it houses a permanent exhibition of state archives.
