Louis Hector Leroux: The artist was a pupil of Francois Edouard Picot. From 1859 onwards he studied at the Parisian École des Beaux Arts and was awarded numerous honours and medals. His preferred themes were scenes from the ancient world and representations of the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
