Jan Frans van Bredael d. Å

(Antwerp 1686–1750) Elegant hunting party resting at a blacksmith’s, signed and dated lower left: “J. F. v. Breda 1712”, oil on panel, 28.5 x 31.5 cm, framed

This impressive painting which alludes to Rococo coloration was produced by Jan Frans van Bredael at the height of his creativity, when his works – smaller-scale in accordance with the aristocratic taste for ‘Dutch fashion’ – enjoyed great popularity. Bredael’s reputation was so great that King Louis XV of France visited him in 1746 during his stay in the city and acquired four small paintings from him. Around 1700, Jan Frans, who would later be very successful, was working with his brother, Joseph for the Antwerp art dealer, Jacob de Witte. He produced paintings for him in the style of Wouwermans, who was still one of the most sought-after artists among his courtly clientele. Bredael’s finely executed representations are held in many important European collections. The Barockgalerie in Bayreuth owns two comparable compositions, which are also dated 1712 and have identical signatures (Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, inv. no. 7251 and 7260).
