A very early 18th/19th century Royal Veranda post,
Owo Yoruba, Nigeria.
Wood, 100 x 24 x 15 cm. This figure would have been created as a caryatid figure o the royal palace courtyard. This is the only known post to represent the Babalawo or diviner, holding the oracle board in his hands to communicate with the spirits. The round large heads represent character, self control, and motivation and the eyes are large to indicate awareness.
