Prince Eugene, son of a French aristocrat, was destined for a career in the clergy but ran away to Vienna in 1683. Having joined the Imperial Army, he took part in the Great Turkish War 1683-1699, from 1697 as commander in chief.
Among his successful engagements: Battle of Kahlenberg 1683, Budapest 1686, Senta 1697, War of Spanish Succession 1701-1713/14, Höchstädt an der Donau 1704, Turin 1709, Turkish War 1714-1716 in Belgrade. Eugene was considered the ablest commander of his age and, as a politician, placed the interests of the State above dynastic considerations.
