Jacob de Backer

Jacob de Backer - Obrazy starých mistrů

(Antwerp 1560 – circa 1590/91)
The Fall of Man,
oil on panel, 38 x 27 cm, framed

The present painting is accompanied by a certificate from Klaus Ertz
(23 August 2018).

Ertz writes: ‘The life and work of this Mannerist figure painter must be regarded as essentially unchartered. In his “Schilder-Boeck”, Karel van Mander praises him as one of the most excellent colourists. The two figures of Adam and Eve betray Italian influences coming from Giorgio Vasari and other Roman Mannerists. This suggests that the artist had travelled to Italy, which was practically obligatory for most Flemish painters at the time. But not only do his mostly large-sized figures betray Italian inspirations, they are also reminiscent of the art of the Flemish Frans Floris. The Late Mannerist poses of the two figures, with Adam’s accentuated muscles and Eve’s mannered leg posture, are entirely typical of late-fifteenth-century history painting in the northern Italianate tradition and had a lasting impact on Peter Paul Rubens’s early figure style […].’ Ertz dates the painting to the period before 1590.
