Bathing nymphs in a forest,

The present painting is accompanied by a certificate from Klaus Ertz (13 August 2018). The picture will be included and reproduced in his forthcoming catalogue raisonné under no. 221a.
Ertz writes: ‘Both the interwoven forms of this forest landscape, in which the bathers busy themselves with washing sheep, and the figures with their “eloquent” arm movements, rendered in three-quarter, half, or lost profiles, could not be more typical of the mature AvS. One could take the woolly balls of foliage and the glimpses of the branch structures inside the treetops as compensating for a signature, which, as a rule and not as an exception, is lacking in this painter’s works […].’ He dates the painting to the years between 1620 and 1630.
