Balthasar Denner, portrait and miniature painter, (Hamburg 1685-1749 Rostock), from 1707 student of painting at the Berlin Academy, numerous portraits for German nobility, incl. Dukes of Holstein-Gottorp, the future Tsar Peter II. von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttl, Princes Mentschikoff, for the Danish royal family Christian VI. and Sophie Charlotte; The portrait ’Kopf einer alten Frau’ was purchased by Karl VI. and ’Kopf eines alten Mannes’ was painted in 1726 on his commission. In 1729 August II. (Dresden) acquires several paintings; 1743 portrait of the Swedish pretender Duke Adolf Friedrich von Holstein; 1746 Prince Elector pf Cologne, Clemens August of Bavaria; 1747 Duke of Holstein- Plön; commissions by the Mecklenburg court etc.; self-portraits in Vienna and Braunschweig, with paintings by his hand in the majority of major national and international collections.
