Provenance:
According to the previous owner, Collection of Counts Hochberg, Chateau Fürstenstein, Waldenburg in Silesia;
Chateau Fürstenstein is still Silesia's largest chateau, located on the northern outskirts of the town of Waldenburg/Walbrzych, in the Fürstenstein/Ksiaz district of Lower Silesia, Poland. The first castle was built in the late 13th century by Duke Bolko I. of Schweidnitz and eventually acquired by Konrad I. of Hoberg in 1509 along with attached estates. The new owners, members of Silesian nobility, who became known as Counts of Hochberg from 1740, and as of ca. 1850, via an inheritance, also as Princes of Pleß, used the chateau as the family's ancestral seat. Today, the entire complex, including the terraces, outbuildings, and stud, is open to the public with various partly restored buildings used as galleries, exhibition spaces, restaurants, and souvenir booth.
The view of the chateau depicted on the vase is based on an oil painting “Schloß Fürstenstein bey Freyburg in Schlesien” by the famous landscape and veduta painting Sebastian Carl Christoph Reinhardt, which was first shown by the artist shortly after its completion at the 1794 Berlin Academy Exhibition. The view became more widely known thanks to a coloured copperplate by Daniel Berger (1744-1824), a version of which now belongs to the Collection of the Berlin National Library. A similar scene, viewed from a slightly lower vantage point, exist in the form of a copperplate engraving by Friedrich Gottlieb Endler (1763-1822) owned by the "Stiftung Kulturwerk Silesia". Reinhardt's original oil painting is considered lost. Before 1945, it was either in the art collection of the Prussian royal family or the collection of the Counts Hochberg, Princes of Pleß.
Sebastian Carl Christoph Reinhardt was born in 1738, in Ortenburg, Lower Bavaria, and attended the grammar school in Regensburg. His artistic studies began in the Duchy of Brunswick, at the Collegium Carolinum and the picture gallery of Chateau Salzdahlum; additional studies and extensive travels later also took him to Hamburg, Amsterdam, Saxony, and Brandenburg. He managed to attract the interest of the Prussian minister and curator of the Berlin Academy of Arts, Friedrich Anton Freiherr von Heinitz, who was also a member of the board of the KPM. Patronised by Heinlitz, Reinhardt first showed views of Potsdam and the surrounding area at the 1788 Academy Exhibition in Berlin, and that same year became an extraordinary member of this institution.
Not long after this, he received the commission to record the Silesian scenery in his artistic work. As the “foremost painter of the Giant Mountains” he regularly contributed to the Berlin Academy exhibitions, by 1824 presenting 67 painting, many of which were acquired by the Prussian royal house and remain in the Hohenzollern chateaus in and around Berlin. Daniel Berger rendered 14 of these paintings as copperplate engravings. Reinhardt also worked on commission for the Hochberg Collection, and Hans Heinrich VI. von Hochberg Fürstenstein dedicated an entire gallery to his work. Reinhardt died on 30. May 1827 in Hirschberg.
