Chinese Silk Carpet,
China, c. 215 x 127 cm, mid-19th century, asymmetrical knot, open to the left, cotton foundation; unusual silk carpet, its ground brocaded with metal threads, with an elusive inscription indicating that the present piece was manufactured by “Cai Yin” as an official commission, also enigmatic are the atypical Chinese field symbols as well as the “three-flower pattern” in the main border, which is reminiscent of East Turkestan; this carpet is in superb colour condition and overall state of preservation with full silk pile, original edges, finishes with fringes, shiny metal and soft, cloth-like feel, it has always been in use as a tapestry, with a linen band at top on the back and rings for hanging.
